  1. Effect of sperm preparation and type of extender.

Evenson, D.P., Thompson, L., and Jost, L.  (1994)  Flow cytometric evaluation of boar semen by the sperm chromatin structure assay as related to cryopreservation and fertility. Theriogenology 41:637-651.

Boar sample excellent sperm DNA integrity

Boar sample poor sperm DNA integrity

  1. Heterospermic index relative to DFI.

  2. DFI and pregnancy rates as well as litter numbers.

Using the advantage that pigs are multiparous, it has been shown that the DFI of boars is significantly correlated not only with the pregnancy rate but also the number of pigs /litter.  This likely means  that the damaged sperm can fertilize an egg but the embryo likely dies later in utero.
